I have chosen as my organism a type of algae that I found in my samples I collected. Zygnema (also called thread algae) is a type of green algae. The algae often occurs in calm waters as free-floating, thready, light green “wadding“. Each cell contains two large star-shaped chloroplasts. Chloroplasts are responsible for photosynthesis in the plant cell. They contain the chlorophyll at which the reactions of photosystems I and II take place. Chloroplasts are surrounded by a double membrane, their interior is filled with the so-called stroma, the basic substance. A special ability of algae is to be able to use the ionic hydrogen carbonate for photosynthesis in case of scarcity of dissolved carbon dioxide. In this process they release hydroxide ions, increasing the pH value of the water in its environment. Increasing the pH value up to 11, means the water is very alkaline. So it’s very corrosive for the skin. Photo Threaded algae do not grow firmly on material anchoring themselves there with special adhesive organs, but rather form bushy cushions. Individual threads drift through the water in strong currents and then get stuck to objects or plants to continue growing. This type of algae is very resistant and adaptive causing it to grow in almost any sweet water environment.

A characteristic of a living being is to reproduce in order to secure the existence of the species. I realized in my research, that over 99% of the content is “How to kill Zygnema in the most efficient way! This is why my main focus is on how to make sure the survival need of the algae is guaranteed.

    • can the algae become the desirable pet?
    • How can I sell it?
    • Efficient way to make it interesting?
    • How can I combine an interesting shape of an aquarium (interest of surviving) with all the other needs of the algae?
